Weekly shiur is our regular touchpoint as a community. Each zman, we’ll learn a text in SVARA’s method, and then explore key pedagogical themes together. 

Preparation:

Weekly assignments will consist of some or all of the following elements:

• Assigned text to prep in chevruta ahead of shiur
• Secondary readings, essays, book chapters to read on your own ahead of shiur
• Personal reflection activities during and ahead of shiur

February 23 – Unpacking Pedagogic Beliefs

מעיקרא אתא לקמיה דרבי עקיבא ומדלא מצי למיקם אליביה אתא לקמיה דרבי ישמעאל וגמר גמרא והדר אתא לקמיה דרבי עקיבא וסבר סברא

• Plus the two comments from Rashi:
  • 1) וגמר גמרא
  • 2) אתא לקמיה דרבי עקיבא וסבר סברא
• Context: On the earlier side of our daf, the gemara is discussing Rabbi Meir, and tells the following “origin story” of sorts about how Rabbi Meir came to be who he is. This text is juicy, and it has a parallel text (with parallel Rashi comments) on Sotah 20a, three lines from the bottom close to the end of the line. (There, too, it starts with מעיקרא.)
