About the Practicum

In the Fall/Winter Zman (between October and February) and then again in the Spring Zman (between February and May), Fellows will design, implement, and facilitate a multi-week bet midrash taught in SVARA’s method. This Kollel Practicum is designed to help you (continue to) deepen your teaching in SVARA’s method and support your continued exploration of COMP in your teaching practice.

We expect that some of you will offer your practicum in person, and others will teach online. Both of these modes of teaching and learning are beautiful, expansive, and complex! We want to support you in developing your online and in-person teaching muscles as much as possible, and the practicum requirements outlined below reflect this.

About the Practicum

Fellows will implement two practica throughout their Pedagogy Year. First, in the Fall/Winter Zman between October and February, and then again in the Spring Zman between February and May.

  • Each practicum should cover at least one full cycle of SVARA’s 4-step method (prep in chevruta, shiur, chazara, recitation), and we encourage you to cycle through more than once!
  • Your bet midrash can take place in partnership with an existing institution or as a free-standing course, and can take place online or in person.
  • Fellows can receive up to $1,000 in microgrants for each practicum (a total of $2,000/year) to support your teaching, which can include the creation of materials, acquisition of dictionaries/masechtot/books, compensation for fairies/captioners/interpreters, etc. Submit your microgrants here.
  • Please send Laynie, along with your Faculty Mentor, the dates / times / location of your Fall Practicum by the start of Fall Zman.
